What a complete system costs
Component prices are the easy part. The number people actually want is the installed cost, and that is set by three things: your daily consumption, how much of your load you want to keep running during an outage, and what your roof makes possible.
To make the arithmetic concrete, take a 5kW array built from twelve 440W panels at KES 9,900 each — that is KES 118,800 of panels. Add a 3.5kW inverter at KES 48,000 and a 5kWh battery at KES 95,000, and the core equipment is around KES 262,000. On top of that sit the mounting structure, DC and AC protection, isolators, earthing, cabling and containment, labour, commissioning and testing. In practice that pushes a system of this size into the KES 350,000 to 500,000 range installed.
Scaling storage moves the figure fastest. Doubling battery capacity on the system above adds KES 95,000 before anything else changes, which is why the first question at survey is not how big your roof is but how much of your load genuinely needs to survive a blackout.
Where the money goes
Roughly, on a residential hybrid system: panels are a third to 40% of equipment cost, storage a quarter to a third, the inverter around a fifth, and the balance of system — mounting, protection, cable, containment — the remainder. Labour and commissioning are additional. Anyone quoting you a system materially below this without explaining why is usually saving money on the balance of system, which is the part that keeps the installation safe.
Payback
Payback is a function of what you displace. A system that covers daytime consumption for a business that operates in daylight pays back quickest, because every generated unit displaces a purchased unit at the retail tariff and little storage is needed. A household that consumes mostly in the evening needs storage to displace anything, and storage lengthens payback. Backup value — not losing stock, not losing production, not running a generator — is real but harder to put in a spreadsheet.
Electricity tariffs in Kenya are reviewed periodically by EPRA, so any payback figure calculated today rests on a tariff that may change. We will run the arithmetic on your actual bills at survey rather than on an average.
Questions
How much does a solar system cost in Kenya?
The equipment for a 5kW hybrid system with 5kWh of storage comes to roughly KES 250,000 to 290,000 at our current component prices. Installed, with mounting, protection, cabling, labour and commissioning, a system at that size typically lands between KES 350,000 and 500,000 depending on roof access, how much of the load is backed up and how much storage is specified.
What is the price per watt of solar panels in Kenya?
Across our range, between about KES 18 and KES 23 per watt. The 585W module is currently the cheapest per watt at roughly KES 18/W; the 440W and 610W bifacial modules are around KES 22.50/W.
Is solar cheaper than KPLC in Kenya?
Over the life of the system, for daytime consumption, generally yes — the system is a capital cost against a tariff that recurs. Whether it pays back in two years or seven depends on how much you consume, when you consume it and how much storage you buy. Storage is the expensive part; a system sized to cover daytime load without a large battery pays back fastest.
Do prices include installation?
No. Component prices on this site are supply-only. Installed system prices are quoted after a site survey, because mounting, cable runs, protection and labour vary with the building.
