Hybrid, Off-Grid or Grid-Tied Solar in Kenya

Three system types, one decision. What separates them is how they treat the KPLC connection and the battery. Here is what each does and how to tell which one fits your situation.

The three types in one minute

A grid-tied system has panels and an inverter but no battery. It feeds your building during the day and leans on the grid the rest of the time. It is the cheapest to install and cuts your daytime bill, but when the grid goes down it goes down with it — for safety, a grid-tied inverter switches off in an outage.

A hybrid system adds a battery and a smarter inverter. It cuts the bill like a grid-tied system and also carries selected circuits through an outage, charging the battery from sun or grid and switching over automatically when the power fails. It is the most common choice in Kenya precisely because outages are common.

An off-grid system has no KPLC connection at all. The panels and a larger battery are the only source of power, so the system must be sized for the worst stretch of cloudy days, which makes it the most expensive per unit. It is the right answer where there is no grid to connect to — a remote site, a borehole, a farm beyond the line — and rarely the right answer where a grid connection exists.

How to choose

The choice follows from two questions. First: do you have a grid connection? If you do not, the decision is made — off-grid is the only option. If you do, the second question decides it: do you need power to continue during an outage? If outages do not trouble you and you only want a lower bill, grid-tied is the cheapest route. If losing power costs you — spoiled stock, stalled production, a dark house, a dead pump — hybrid is the system that pays for itself in avoided disruption as well as a lower bill.

For most Kenyan homes and businesses with a grid connection, hybrid is the sensible default: it captures the bill saving of grid-tied and adds outage cover, which is the problem people most often buy solar to solve. We size the battery only for the circuits that must survive, which keeps the cost down.

A common mistake

People sometimes ask for an off-grid system because they want independence from KPLC, when they have a perfectly good grid connection. Going fully off-grid in that situation means paying for a large battery to cover rare bad-weather stretches that a grid connection would otherwise bridge for free. Unless the connection is genuinely unreliable or absent, a hybrid system gives the same day-to-day experience — solar by day, backup through outages — for considerably less.

Questions

What is the difference between hybrid and off-grid solar?

A hybrid system keeps its KPLC connection and uses it alongside a battery, so the battery only has to cover outages. An off-grid system has no connection and the battery is the sole backup, so it must be sized for the worst run of cloudy days. That makes off-grid the most expensive type, sensible only where there is no grid.

Does grid-tied solar work during a blackout?

No. For safety, a grid-tied inverter shuts off when the grid fails, so a pure grid-tied system goes down with the grid. If you need power during outages you need a hybrid system with a battery.

Which solar system is best for a home in Kenya?

For most homes with a grid connection, a hybrid system is the sensible default: it cuts the daily bill and carries essential circuits through outages. Grid-tied suits homes with a reliable supply that only want a lower bill; off-grid suits homes with no grid connection at all.

Is off-grid cheaper than hybrid?

No. Off-grid needs a larger battery to cover bad-weather stretches with no grid to fall back on, so it costs more per unit than a hybrid system of similar daily output. Off-grid is chosen for necessity — no grid — not to save money.
